I don’t even remember what that movie was, but what a great line.

The kid has some weird gift/curse and he can see people who aren’t there, and actually interact with them and help them do whatever happens next.

Having been an entrepreneur and worked with literally hundreds of them over the years, I think it’s safe to say it’s a skill we all share.

We can look out at the world around us and see not what’s there, but what ISN’T there.

Personally, I can’t walk into a restaurant or store or plumbing supply shop without seeing what’s missing. What they’re NOT doing that would bring in more clients. What would make the business more attractive, make everyone more welcome and give each customer a reason to share their great experience.

It’s a gift and a curse. I don’t know how many times I’ve had conversations with small businesses and given them ideas that could change everything for them and realized nothing would ever change. Free advice rarely does anything. But on the other hand, I’ve really helped a lot of clients see what they never saw.

Here’s some homework. For the next week, start looking at every business you encounter and find five things they could do better. Things that could  either grow the business or improve the customer experience. You don’t need to be an expert on anything. Just trust your intuition. Find five things.

You’ll be surprised at how easy it’ll be.

Do it for week and if you’re really on top of things, write them down.

Then look at your list after a week and look for  a pattern.

Now look at your business. Chances are, your list will make your business more profitable, grow faster or improve your customers experience.

Go look for dead people. They’re out there, all around you. You can help them AND yourself at the same time.
